Opening without destroying the safe

There is nearly always a way into a safe that does not involve cutting it open, and the order of attempts runs from least to most destructive. Manipulation comes first on mechanical dial safes — reading the mechanism through the dial to recover the combination. It takes patience and it does not damage anything, and when it works the safe is left fully usable with its original combination recovered.

Where manipulation is not viable, a precise drill point into a known location lets the lock be bypassed or the mechanism seen directly. Done properly this is a small hole in a specific spot, plugged and repaired afterwards, and the safe continues to work. Done improperly it destroys the fire lining or triggers a relocker and turns a repairable safe into scrap.

The distinction is knowing the model. Safes from major manufacturers have documented drill points; unbranded imports frequently do not, which makes them harder and riskier to open than the far more expensive safe next to them.

The common failures

Forgotten combinations are the most frequent call, and often the easiest — particularly on safes where the combination was written down somewhere in the building and simply needs finding before anyone drills anything.

Dead batteries on electronic keypads look like a catastrophic failure and usually are not. Most electronic safe locks keep the combination in non-volatile memory, so replacing the batteries restores normal operation with the existing code intact. The keypad going dark does not mean the combination is lost.

Mechanical failures are the genuine problem: a broken lever spring, a detached dial ring, or a relocker that has fired because the safe was moved roughly or someone attempted entry. A fired relocker is designed specifically to make the safe impossible to open by normal means, and dealing with one is a longer job.

After it opens

A safe that has been drilled needs the hole repaired and the lock replaced before it is secure again, and that should happen at the same visit rather than being left. An open hole in a safe body defeats both the security and, on fire-rated units, the fire rating.

It is also the right moment to change the combination to something recorded properly, and to check whether the safe is actually bolted down. A large number of home safes are not, which means the entire unit can simply be carried out and opened elsewhere at leisure. Bolting it to the floor is a short job and it matters more than the lock does.
