Cut, then programmed — two separate jobs

Replacing a car key is really two operations. The physical blade has to be cut to match the vehicle's lock, and the electronics inside the head have to be introduced to the car's immobilizer so the engine will actually start. A key that opens the door but will not crank the engine has had the first half done and not the second.

Cutting is done either from the existing key or, if every key is lost, from the vehicle's key code — which is derived from the VIN with proof of ownership. Modern high-security blades use a milled track rather than the older edge-cut pattern, and need a different machine, which is why some shops can copy one key and not another.

Programming is where the model year matters. Most vehicles allow a new key to be added through the diagnostic port with the right equipment. A shrinking but real number of makes lock the immobilizer data behind manufacturer servers, and those genuinely have to go to a dealer. We check the year and make on the phone rather than after arriving.

All keys lost versus adding a spare

These are priced differently for a good reason. Adding a spare while you still hold a working key is quick: the car is already willing to talk, and the existing key authorizes the addition. Doing it before you need it is by far the cheapest version of this job.

All keys lost is a longer procedure. The car has to be put into a programming state without an authorized key, which on many models involves a security wait — a fixed delay of ten to thirty minutes enforced by the vehicle itself as an anti-theft measure. Nobody can shorten it. Any quote that ignores that wait is going to change when the van arrives.

If a key has been stolen rather than lost, all remaining keys should be wiped from the vehicle at the same time. Programming a replacement without deleting the old one leaves a working key in someone else's pocket.

Why this is cheaper than the dealership

A dealership cannot come to the car. If the vehicle is sitting in a lot in Lawrence with no working key, it has to be towed to them, and the tow is often comparable to the cost of the key itself.
